Garden of the Metamorphosis in the Space Capsule’
'FREEDOM OF DEFORMITY, DEFORMITY OF FREEDOM' 1978, Tetsumi Kudo When on the London trip at the start of the first semester, we visited Hauser & Wirth to see an amazing installation of Kudo's; the whole gallery was coated in astroturf, which sat in unity with the dark, gruesome sculptures. Kudos strange interest with impotence and nuclear attacks in Japan and France has formed a very unique set of works that 'grow' from the earth. The wires, random objects and body parts suggest a disconfiguration of the earth as it grows again, due to nuclear chemicals. Some of the sculptures smartly mixed animals with humans which is a particlar interest of mine. A particular favourite of mine was the snail/penis. The gruesome slimy snail is normal from the shell downards, but above the shell, crawling upwards against the grass is a tip of a penis acting as the head. The focus in my work is aimed towards our relationship with humans and animals and how we collide. Also this relates directly to my last piece exhibited of an octopus tentacle in replacement of a thumb in a cast of a hand.
